Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarun Temple or Srisailam Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. The temple is located at Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. It is considered to be one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and as one of the 18 Shakti Peethas of goddess Parvati.

In this temple, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna, and is represented in the form of lingam whereas goddess Parvati is worshipped as Brahmaramba. It is also the one of three temples where both jyotirlinga and shaktipeeth are present together.

HISTORY

When the elder son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati (Karikeya) got angry and came to the kronch hills from Kailash., lord Shiva and goddess Parvati came here and stayed with the name of Arjun and Mallika. Hence this place is called as Mallikarjun.

When Shiva and Parvati decided to find brides for their sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, both sons argued who was to get married first. In order to solve this, lord Shiva asked to go around the world in Pradakshinam, and the one who would complete the act first would get married first.

Kartikeya went on his vahana to take a pradikshna around the world whereas Ganesha took 7 rounds around his parents. Lord Shiva got his son Ganesha married to Buddhi, Siddhi, and Riddhi.

Kartikeya was angry on seeing this and went to stay alone on the mount kraunja in the name of Kumarabhrahmachari. When he saw Lord Shiva coming to pacify him, he tried to move to another place. The place where Shiva and Parvati stayed is known as Shrishailam.
